Best SEO WordPress Plugins

Before we get into what the best SEO WordPress Plugins are I think we should address the SEO part and what is it and why is it so important.  First and foremost it stands for Search Engine Optimization.

What does search engine optimization actually do for you?  According to Webopedia and Wikipedia, SEO is strategies, techniques, and tactics to increase the number of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in search results.

Finding the best SEO WordPress plugins as you can guess is very important. There are a few to choose from, and most if not all have a free version you can try.  The two most popular are Yoast and Squirrly.  These are both, in my opinion, the best of the best.

WordPress does offer you a free All In One SEO plugin that is equally useful for anyone just starting out.  According to many of the older searches I had found, it boasts the All In One SEO and the Yoast Plugins as the most downloaded and best on the Web.

After personally using both, and almost going to Pro on Yoast I have to be honest and share that they are not the only Big Dog out there anymore.  You know how fast a little squirrel can move, right?  Then I have a treat for you in my review that you are going to want to see.

Compare 2 of the best SEO WordPress Plugins

Yoast offers WordPress users:

The Good Stuff

I think it depends largely on what you want your plugin to do.  Most beginners start with the All In One or the Yoast WordPress Plugins.  You will see both a free and a Pro offer.

  • Free is great for anyone just starting out.
  • easy to use and follow
  • It allows you to add SEO title, meta description, and meta keywords
  • the content analyzer is wonderful to have and saves editing time.

Not So Great:

What I found using Yoast was

  • the upgrade option was/is expensive
  • only good for one site.
  • support is only available for Pro version
  • the free version only offers one focus keyword
  • extensions must be purchased separately ( a bundle is offered)

If you have more than one site, and you want to have your SEO for more than one site, then this is expensive for most.  Yoast SEO provides awesome all-round SEO functionality. However, if you want features tailored to your website’s specific needs you will have to purchase more than just what the Pro costs are.

Even at just two or three sites offered it would be in the $200 and $300+ range depending on your country and dollar value.  For me personally, this was just not an option.

Introducing The Squirrly SEO

Squirrly is the best wordpress seo plugin

this is a plugin created to help NON- experts in any site to get better content, ranking, and analytics.  Squirrly helps you write content that is search engine friendly and ALSO Human-friendly.

Coming out of the UK this amazing tool is not just for WordPress sites.  I want to share what I am using after trying both the ‘All In One SEO’ and the Yoast plugins and my best SEO Wordpress plugins choice.

Squirrly Limited started as a Startup company back in September 2012, by
Florin Muresan and Calin Vingan, with two angel investors: Philipp Kandal and Ibrahim Evsan.
The Squirrly SEO plugin has been available to the public since February 2013. The plugin’s users are spread worldwide, and most of them are located in the US, Canada, and the UK.

As you can see below in this from Neil Patel, a well-known Webpreneur and one of the world’s most influential marketers has shared it is pretty awesome.

Recently, Neil Patel said:  “In my own words, “Squirrly is more than just an SEO tool––it’s a complete content marketing suite.”

I’m not trying to be egotistical by quoting myself, I promise. That’s a testimonial I wrote years ago for SEO Squirrly.  To this day, it remains one of the most comprehensive SEO plugins, free or paid.”
Neil Patel (one of the world’s most influential marketers)  Also by Brian Dean and over 100 content marketing experts have given their positive feedback.

A Look at the Good Stuff:

The free version of Squirrly SEO will help you if you have small content marketing needs, such as

  • Squirrly.co comes as a free software
  • 5 published articles/month
  • weekly audit report
  • The Keyword Research tool helps you find long tail keywords
  • helps you find keywords that are trending now
  • support is available to everyone

The tool looks at your competitor’s keywords, and it will grab the
best ones for your articles.  This wonderful tool is right there in your back office so to speak, where you generate all your awesome posts and pages.

Free as you can see above is awesome.  As a Pro Member, you, of course, have more options open up for you.  What they’ve done is make sure that you now have a clever assistant inside your WordPress dashboard.

This is just so cool to have!!  The Live Assistant feature helps you in real-time,
as you’re typing your article so that you make the written text friendly for
human readers, not just search engines.
By using the Live Assistant from Squirrly, you will learn how to fully
optimize a blog article for both humans and search engines and not get yourself in Google doo-doo!

There are so many reasons to upgrade to the pro version.  One of the turning points for me, other than everything above, was the fact that my paid membership included up to 7 sites!  Like Hello!  For the same or just a tad more than Yoast, I could have all my sites getting ranked.

No brainer that I am so happy to say I Love Squirrly!  And even better, right now, this week ( July 24) there is an Ice Cream Cone Sale and it is so worth it!

not only is it the best seo wordpress plugin it is on sale now

So grab the ice cream while it’s frozen in this amazing deal!

My Final Thoughts

While the All In One and Yoast Seo plugins are great and very useful for any beginner, there comes a time when you know you need a little, okay maybe a lot, more help with your site content.  I didn’t even know what the heck SEO meant when I first started.

I was, like I said, going to do the Yoast up-grade but then I found Squirrly and the rest is history.  Seriously if you want the most and the best your dollar can buy then you need to get this plugin.  Free or do the upgrade, your choice.  My bet goes on after trying and seeing how much time you save, all the keyword assistance and long tail keywords…..yeah you will know.  You will.

Okay, I am about to hand over the reigns to you and your keyboard.  I do hope you will share this post and leave your thoughts too.  What do you think about Yoast or the All In One?

Great article. I was thinking about doing an article on SEO plugins. You have done a great job talking about the pros, cons, and how each one would a person who doesn’t know much about seo.

Thanks for the amazing content. You did an amazing job walking through the different aspects of seo plugins. You should write a ‘beginners’ guide on SEO. I think it would help to draw more people to this article as well. I have written one that you can use as a guide if you want.

    SEO Guide: Beginners

    • Merry Conner says:

Thank you so much, Alexander. That would be awesome and very kind of you. I love how we can assist each other as marketers. Appreciate your kind words on my post and your welcome suggestions.

  2. Gary says:

    Hi Merry,
I have only used the All in One SEO so I have nothing to compare to. But, I do know that I’m not getting much traffic. Of course there are many other factors that affect this.
I have heard of Yoast but not Squirrly. It’s always good to know about other options and that Live Assistant sounds great. Maybe someday soon I’ll be in position to make a purchase like this for my site. For now, I can try the free version. On average, can you say how much it has increased the rankings of your posts? Again, I know there are other factors that affect this.
Thanks for sharing this great review.

    • Merry Conner says:

Yes, Gary, I really do encourage you to do the free version. You will be surprised at how much is offered even free. That is how I started using Squirrly SEO. They are in the UK and winning awards consistently. I am not sure on the traffic as of yet, but I have seen improvement in my standings. Another ‘best’ is that you can use the paid version on more than one site as Yoast and others offer. Up to 7! They will have a sale again and that is worth waiting for. Thank you for visiting and I wish you the very best as you enjoy this plugin.

  3. Irma says:

    Hi Merry! Great post 🙂
    I tried Yoast and Squirrly both and I would say that Squirrly is way more user friendly! I also found that the recommendations from Squirrly were easier to follow than Yoast;
I found that upgrading Yoast was expensive and I did not want to get attached to it.

I am glad that there is getting to be more competition for SEO tools, so that everyone can benefit from it. As a new blogger, I am always reading reviews of products to make the most informed decision. I am glad that I read your review!

    • Merry Conner says:

Thank you, Irma. Yes, I agree with you and the Yoast upgrade being what it was prompted me to look into squirrly. Heck for less than one site with Yoast I could do up to 7 on Squirrly SEO if I wanted to. I also love having my keyword tool and access to that right where I am doing my content from. So much easier and like you said, Squirrly was/is easier to follow.

  4. Neil says:

    Hey, Merry!

As a WordPress blogger myself, there always seems to be a big debate on the best SEO plugin to use – All in One SEO vs Yoast.

I personally use All in One SEO because it does the job just fine for me. But I guess every blogger has different needs when it comes to SEO.

However, I am intrigued by Squirrly because I do like the fact that it’s newbie-friendly, it’s recommended by top marketers, and especially has a built-in keyword tool.

But also learning about the other cool features, I can see why you love it so much.

It seems like the creators have gone above and beyond with the SEO plugin.

On your recommendation, I’m certainly giving Squirrly a whirl on my next new website.

    Thanks,
    Neil

    • Merry Conner says:

Thanks for your thoughts today Neil. Very much appreciated. Yes, Squirrly SEO is pretty darned amazing. I like the fact that I can offer this as a free plugin as well. You still get more features with the free version than the others offer. I look forward to hearing how you like it. Thanks again and all the best with your blogging.

  5. Peter Mangini says:

Hi Merry, I find the article very interesting as I also didn’t fully understand the SEO plug in but you are teaching me something. I currently have the all-in-one-SEO and not the pro version..but probably need to upgrade, so I might use the Squirrely plugin. I didn’t think about it and didn’t know the difference or the importance between the 2. I heard that we shouldn’t use more than 3 plugins on a site but I don’t see how having only 3 is enough. What do you think? I love your site and wish you the best success.

    • Merry Conner says:

Hi Peter and thank you for sharing with us today. Squirrly does more than just your SEO in your backend and it is a time saver for me. I also just recently saw that there are 108 options we can use with S. compared to the others at 15.
Having at least 6 plugins is considered ok for site speed etc. I try and keep mine at 5 or 6 and that is why when choosing a plug in you want it to multitask for you as much as possible. 🙂 . Thank you so much for your lovely compliment as well. It is very appreciated.

  6. Sarim says:

    Hello Merry,
Great article, very helpful and easy to understand so well done.
I am relatively new to this and wanna ask:
At what point you need Yoast or Squirrly and gotta say bye bye to All in one SEO, if dealing with only one website?
At this moment, my website has got All in one. I am now aware that in future what plugins I may need to choose from many via this outstanding post.
Thank you very much n all the best.

    • Merry Conner says:

No, Sarim, you can use All In one and Yoast on different sites as long as you are using the free version. Squirrly SEO offers up to 7 sites on an upgrade option which for me was awesome and the costs were so low it was worth it. You should be using some sort of SEO and Keyword helper as soon as you have an understanding of how it all works. In future, you will not need too many plugins. But, because you do have keyword access with Squirrly, then I would recommend that route. They have a free version with more features than the others too. Thank you for visiting and taking the time to comment and ask questions which are very important when you are learning. I wish you much success in all your endeavors.

    • Merry Conner says:

Thank you so much, Norman. I didn’t know there were other options until recently and then the difference was like night and day. Thank you for taking a minute to share with us.

    • Merry Conner says:

You are very welcome and thank you for visiting and leaving such a nice comment. I honestly only try to share what I know is the best and most helpful when it comes to tools and learning. Have an awesome day! 🙂

  7. Dave says:

Another SEO tool to consider, personally my site is too young to consider other options except for AINSEO – I tried Yoast over a year ago but dropped it because I found I was investing my time in getting “Green Lights” on my SEO analysis when i should’ve been focussed on content and posts.
Does a start up site need anything more than the basic AIOSEO?

    • Merry Conner says:

I tried both the All In One and Yoast, Dave and you are sure right about the green light!! I found that very frustrating. Squirrly SEO beats that which is another reason for my switch. I think a start-up needs good SEO and keyword information IF you have a good idea of what you are doing. A start up site is one that grows by content and strong keyword analysis. That last part is one of my favorite things now as I have it right there as I post. No jumping back and forth doing research. Thank you for visiting today and leaving your great comment and questions. It is appreciated. All the best with your new site and when you are ready, Squirrly SEO is FREE.

  8. John says:

Great review of the best SEO WordPress plugins Merry, you have given me some food for thought here!
I haven’t heard of Squirrly before, this really does sound very cool.
Up until now, I have just used the all-in-one SEO, and although I have found it quite good, Squirrly seems to have so many extra advantages!
Definitely trying this one out, thanks for bringing it to my attention 🙂

    • Merry Conner says:

My pleasure for sure. Thank you for visiting John. And you are absolutely right, Squirrly SEO does have so much more. Something like 108 to 15 in comparison. I hope you enjoy as much as I have.

  9. Don says:

Merry – very informative post! I appreciate it. I must admit I have not heard of Squirrly. But I’m not happy with the All In One or Yoast. This caught my eye,”The tool looks at your competitor’s keywords, and it will grab the
    best ones for your articles.”

Is the price for Squirrly a one time price or monthly? If it’s a one time price and it does what I quoted from your article, it’s worth it.

By the way I appreciate how you use the pop-up. 😉

All the best to you, Merry.
    Don

    • Merry Conner says:

Thank you, Don. yes Squirrly SEO is so awesome. When I saw that you could do up to 7 sites for one price, yup that beat Yoast hands down and everything is right there on your WordPress site as you do your posts. You can do monthly, yearly or Free. I would wait for another special on the year as it is a really awesome deal usually. If you use this link, download to your computer and then upload to WordPress in the Zip file you can set everything up from there. The service and support are awesome as well. Just can’t really say enough.

  10. Abdusalam Green says:

Hi Merry, this review has come at just the right time for me.
Until now I’ve been using Jaxxy, but the free version available searches is running low and I’m not ready to go Pro yet, so I’ve started to use the SEO All-In-One, but as you say, it gets a bit fiddly having to go out from my post to check the list and then come back; I end up totally losing track (the old brain cells are not what they used to be).

Squirrly sounds really useful and I will be checking it out, I noticed that you didn’t mention any downside so it must be really awesome 🙂

Hopefully it will ease my doubts about my use of keywords. I’m about 3 weeks in and still not confident that I’m doing SEO in the best way.

A final comment, could you expand on the differences between Squirrly ‘free’ and ‘pro’?

    • Merry Conner says:

Of course Salam. Pro offers more goodies as in anything. Actually, you know what would be even better is to follow my link, here which will take you to their site. I don’t want you to miss any of the goodies.:) here are some of the Pro:

Unlimited posts to optimize / account / month
      100 keyword researches/ account/mo.
100 pages analyzed by SEO Audit
      100 pages analyzed by Analytics

You can, however, use the free version for as long as you need, or feel that you need a bit more. With the free version, you can only get an audit for your first page as well as approximately 108 more features. As you can see far too many to list here. If I may add, you are better to download to your computer and then go to your WordPress plugins and add from your computer. You will then set up your account and log in right there. Makes it so much simpler and safer. I love the ease I have now with the keyword search and analytics with me as I write my content. I really hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

  11. Joseph Barrera says:

    Merry,
Excellent content, excellent read! I am still relatively new to the affiliate marketing game and hadn’t heard of squirrly before now. It has definitely caught my interest and I will be doing my own research on the product. I also look forward to reading more of your content in the very near future (Like right now lol)
Thanks so much and keep up the great work!

    • Merry Conner says:

Thank you for your wonderful words today Joseph. I really appreciate that and I also appreciate that you will do your own research into Squirrly SEO. Thank you again and wishing you all the best as you continue in the awesome field of affiliate marketing.

  12. Peter says:

Hi Merry, Thanks so much for this fantastic post! I’d never heard of Squirrly (just All in One and Yoast). Just when you think you’re starting to grasp this whole blogging thing and then boom…something like this comes up. I’m currently with Yoast and have also tried All-in-One, so very similar to your own experience. I’ll definitely give Squirrly a go, now that I know about it! Thanks again, Kind regards, Peter.

    • Merry Conner says:

Thanks, Peter and you are welcome. I personally like having my keyword search right there with me as I am writing and when you think about the costs involved in a keyword program, it is all covered at Squirrly for you. The deciding factor for me was having more than one site that I needed SEO for and Yoast only does one for the cost to upgrade. Squirrly offers 7. Thank you for sharing with us today Peter. All the best.

    • Merry Conner says:

My pleasure. Thank you for being awesome and leaving a comment. I love sharing what I find that is helpful and works for everyone and the costs are within reason.

  13. Matthew Owen says:

Very informative post about seo plug-ins. I am currently using the all in one Seo plugin and find that it really works for me, but I would be worried about changing to squirrly.
If I did, would I have go keep the all in one seo or could I just get rid of it?

    • Merry Conner says:

Thanks, Matthew and thank you for sharing. No, actually the All In One plugin works side by side if you wanted to give Squirrly SEO a try. I started with the All In One and then went to Yoast which is awesome too but when I looked into upgrading it was a No Go for me. Cost wise Squirrly SEO was the winner. I really love having my keyword assistant right there as I am writing my post. Gives me the opportunity to add other keyword phrases into my post without having to go anywhere else to see them. I do hope you give it a try, you will love what you can do with this. Thanks so much Matthew for taking the time to share your thoughts today.

  14. Claudette says:

I am a beginner and I use SEO All in One. I’m glad I ran across this article; I have never heard about squirrIy and have found the information useful for a future time as I grow in my affiliate business. Thanks for sharing.

    • Merry Conner says:

You are so welcome Claudette. I was introduced to Squirrly by an affiliate marketer and I just so love all the extras I get. It is very important in all stages of your affiliate growth to have the best SEO help available. Seo All In One and Yoast are usually the most popular, but Squirrly is hot on their tails. LoL If you are blogging and writing posts Claudette you might want to consider the free version and download the Plugin or one of the others. It will help you a great deal for keyword ranking. Thanks again for stopping in and taking the time to say Hi.

  15. B says:

Thank you for all this info. I’m using “SEO All-in-One” right now, and I was looking for a better plugin. After this wonderful review I have to check the “Squirrly SEO” now 🙂

Any thoughts about “Yoast SEO” plugin ? It was rated 5 stars by 14,395!

Thanks again for sharing, great reading.

    • Merry Conner says:

Yes, and thank you for mentioning Yoast Bat-el and the 5-star rating! I was using Yoast when I was introduced to Squirrly and it is just my personal opinion but Squirrly does beat Yoast. I think in part due to how much you get, as free or as Pro. Squirrly has received many awards and recognition in Europe and will undoubtedly reach the same levels globally soon. I hope you give Squirrly SEO a try and just do the comparison, as it is pretty impressive.

  16. Erika Morin says:

Hi Merry! Thank you for such an informative blog. I’m still pretty new and frankly, kind of lost on the SEO stuff. I’m currently using the All-in-One package and am satisfied. But let me ask you…does this Squirrly help with editing? I noticed today while doing a final edit, that I would really appreciate a search like when you are writing in Word and you need to find a certain word in your text. Does Squirrly offer something like that in their package? If not, do you know of anything that would make editing a little more user friendly?
And what about this keyword search? Is it similar to Jaxxy but an add-on to other cool perks? I’m really interested in this for my future blogging self.
Thank you again for such great information. I’ll be mulling this over for the future!
    Erika

    • Merry Conner says:

HI, Erika and thanks so much for stopping today. I am going to try and answer as best I can on the editing. Squirrly does help just not with grammar issues or spelling. If that is what you need I would go to http://www.grammarly.com and download to your computer. Truly a life saver! Trust me on that one. It is right now trying to correct me for spelling squirrly wrong. It is spelled wrong but not in this case! 🙂
The keyword search is amazing! I hate that I have to go and save lists of keywords and go back and forth as I am posting. With Squirrly it is all right there. I am not using anything else to find my keywords right now as I don’t need it. It will actually show me in real time, in my blog posting area what is trending, is it easy or hard to rank etc. etc. And yes, it is similar to Jaaxy just offers more on the SEO end too. I would bookmark this for later Erika or give it a try for free. You will love it and your all in one will not have to be deactivated. I had a couple of people get back to me about this and said they already were seeing a difference when compared to the others. Hope this helped a little, and sorry I couldn’t help more with the edit issues. It would be awesome to have something like that tho’.
      All the best Erika.

  17. Miren - Hi Money Bye Scams says:

Thanks for this valuable info, Merry!
I’ve been using All In One SEO but have often wondered about other SEO plugins like Yoast. I had not heard of Squirrly but I’ll look more into it and see if I give it a try, it seems worth it for what you explained. How long have you been using Squirrly?

    Cheers =)
    Miren

    • Merry Conner says:

Hi, Miren. Thanks for visiting. I love hearing from my readers. I too started with the All In One and then saw a few other marketers using Yoast so used that for months actually. I have been using Squirrly now for 3 months, maybe a tad more or less on one of my sites and I so love how much it offers. I have always found finding keywords difficult but with Squirrly, they are right there as I am writing my posts.

  18. Irma says:

I just installed this plugin for my website, and I find it simpler to use than the Yoast AIO. It reminds me to do some of the housekeeping that I might forget, like alt text in media. Thank you for your post and suggestions!

    • Merry Conner says:

Thanks for letting me know Irma. I know it is so awesome. What really spurred me on was that I could upgrade for one year when they run a sale and use it on 7 sites for one price! Like that was amazing as Yoast did not offer more than one site. Enjoy it!!

  19. Linda says:

    Hi Merry,
I appreciate this informative and intriguing post on SEO WordPress plugins. I started out using All-In-One but quickly traded it in for Yoast. The built-in SEO checklist is a convenient time-saver. I particularly like the readability analysis component of Yoast because a human-friendly presentation is at least as critical as a search engine friendly post. I’ve been very happy with Yoast but I have to admit you’ve made me curious about the advantages of Squirrly and I will have to check it out. Thanks for the info!

    • Merry Conner says:

Yes, I agree with you Linda, good points. I too was happy with Yoast but wanted to try the upgrade for more but it was going to be too expensive with more than one site. When I saw Squirrly and tried it for the first time it was awesome. Imagine having not only the SEO built-in but a keyword search with you as you do your post. I wouldn’t have known about it had it not been shared with me so I wanted to do the same. Thank you for sharing and visiting.

  20. Kay says:

I am still new with this SEO thing, but I learned real fast that it is an essential part of successful blog. After reading about Squirrly, I think that I will go ahead and try it. Anything to make my life easier. How much is the membership?

    • Merry Conner says:

You can try it for free if you like Kay and then upgrade as you need it. This week they have an ice cream cone special on that is worth its weight in gold. I had been using the free version but did an upgrade as it made sense with the special offer this week and the 7 sites. The cost for a whole year is only $95.95 for the year. $124.58 if you are in Canada. App. $27.00 or so a month but that is for 7 sites, not just one. You will love it tho’ as I am SEO dumber than dumb! 🙂

  21. Paula says:

I use the SEO All-in-One right now. I’m satisfied at the moment, but I have often wondered about the YOAST. No need to now. I think you’ve explained it enough to make me back away. Squirrly sounds amazing. Definitely a plug in I will need to add to the list of “Wanna Try” ‘s. Even if one just starts with the free version until they build up enough to purchase the pro. The upgrade rocks if it carries up to 7 sites! Not that I have that many, but one never knows what their future holds :o). Thanks much for a great review on the plug ins. Much appreciated.

    • Merry Conner says:

Thanks so much Paula. Yes, I started with the All In One but then tried Yoast and it was awesome in comparison until I wanted to upgrade for more options. It was then I came across Squirrly and seriously I was so impressed there was no going back. ( I did try as I was testing ) When the promotion came up I knew I needed to share this. I am sure it will come again and the free version is pretty darned amazing so go ahead and give it a go. You can actually run it right along side the All In One so you can test it without fear of losing any info. I would suggest using this link and downloading it to your computer. That is how I did it and it was brilliant. Thanks again Paula. Love visiting your site.

  22. Judith says:

I am one of those beginners that can use all the help I can get. If there is a plug in that will benefit me, I am all in! Here’s what I don’t quite understand: If I was to start to use Squirrly, should I install it first then remove the All In One, or do they run at the same time? Will I have to “reset” things? How much does the pro version cost? (CND)
This is very useful information, thanks.

    • Merry Conner says:

Hi Judith and thank you for stopping in and taking the time to ask a few questions. Very good ones I might add. I would suggest you download Squirrly from the link to their site and remove the All In One right after. I was using Yoast at the time, and I downloaded Squirrly to my computer and then uploaded that way. They have the best support ever too. This week it is on sale for I think it was $124. and some cents Canadian. So worth doing if you can manage it. If you are not sure just go with the free version until you are. All the best.
